Leucorrhoea, also known as vaginal or cervical discharge

Leucorrhoea, also known as vaginal or cervical discharge, is a prevalent gynecological condition characterized by an abnormal discharge from the female genital tract. This discharge can vary in consistency, color, and odor, and may be accompanied by other symptoms. Here are the symptoms, causes, and possible underlying factors associated with leucorrhoea:

Symptoms:

  1. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge: Leucorrhoea typically presents as a whitish or yellowish discharge from the vagina. The consistency can range from thin and watery to thick and sticky.

  2. Unpleasant Odor: In some cases, leucorrhoea may be associated with an unpleasant or foul odor.

  5. Burning Sensation: In certain cases, leucorrhoea may be accompanied by a burning sensation, particularly during urination.

Causes:

  1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Fluctuations in hormone levels, particularly estrogen, can lead to an increase in vaginal discharge. This can occur during puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, or menopause.

  2. Infections: Bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections of the reproductive organs, such as bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis (yeast infection), infection due to protozoan,  or trichomoniasis, can cause leucorrhoea.

  3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, or herpes can lead to abnormal vaginal discharge.

  4. Poor Genital Hygiene: Improper genital hygiene practices can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria or fungi, resulting in leucorrhoea.

  5. Cervical Ectopy: This is a condition where cells from the inner lining of the cervix are found on the outer surface. It can lead to increased discharge.

  6. IUD Use: The presence of an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception may lead to an increase in vaginal discharge.

  7. Emotional Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress and anxiety can lead to hormonal imbalances that contribute to leucorrhoea.

  8. Allergic Reactions: Irritation or allergies to certain soaps, detergents, or fabrics can lead to increased vaginal discharge.

  9. Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders can affect hormonal balance and contribute to leucorrhoea.

  10. Pregnancy: Increased vaginal discharge is common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and increased blood flow to the pelvic region.

  11. Ovulation: Midway through the menstrual cycle, there is often an increase in cervical mucus, which can be mistaken for leucorrhoea.

  12. Other Reasons: Vaginal Atrophy (changes in vagina after menopause, Forgotten tampon, pelvic inflammatory diseases, certain types of cancer such vaginal cancer, inflammation or infection at cervix.

It's important to note that while some degree of vaginal discharge is normal and healthy, any significant change in color, consistency, or odor should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
